Why Is My Bitcoin Transaction Taking Hours?

Learn why Bitcoin transactions take longer than other chains & how to track or speed up your transfer.

Updated yesterday

In this article:

Learn why Bitcoin transactions take longer than Ethereum or Solana and how you can track your BTC transaction status using a block explorer.

We also explain how the "Speed Up" feature can be used if your transaction is stuck.

Why is Bitcoin slower?

Bitcoin was designed to be the most secure and decentralized network in the world, but that security comes with a trade-off in speed.

  • Block Times: On average, the Bitcoin network only creates a new "block" of transactions every 10 minutes. Most exchanges and wallets require 3 to 6 blocks (confirmations) before they consider a transaction final. This means a standard transfer often takes 30 to 60 minutes, even when the network is quiet.

  • The "Mempool" Queue: When many people send BTC at once, transactions wait in a digital waiting room called the mempool. Miners prioritize transactions with the highest fees. If you sent your BTC with a "Low" priority, it might wait for several hours - or even a day - until the queue clears.

How to track your BTC transaction

You can see exactly where your Bitcoin is by using a Block Explorer (a search engine for the blockchain).

  1. Go to your Trade tab, then the History section in Best Wallet.

  2. Tap on your pending Bitcoin transaction.

  3. Tap "View on Block Explorer" (or copy the Transaction Hash/ID and paste it into a site like mempool.space).

  4. Look for the "Confirmations" count. If it says "Unconfirmed," your transaction is still waiting in the mempool.

How to speed up a stuck transaction

If your transaction has been pending for hours and you need it to clear faster, Best Wallet offers a Speed Up feature.

  1. In the History section, tap on the pending transaction.

  2. Tap the Speed Up button.

  3. Select a higher gas fee priority (e.g., High).

  4. Review and confirm.

Note: As mentioned in our other guides, for Bitcoin only, you can now only use the "Speed Up" feature once per transaction. This prevents you from wasting extra fees and keeps your transaction history clean.
