Getting Started with Base Chain

Learn about using Base with Best Wallet.

Updated this week

In this article:

Learn how you can interact with the Base Chain using Best Wallet, including how to buy tokens, send and receive crypto, and swap assets on Base — all with low gas fees and full Ethereum compatibility.

Important: Only your multi-chain wallets in Best Wallet support Base Chain assets.

Intro to Base Chain

Base Chain is a Layer 2 blockchain built on top of Ethereum, developed by the exchange, Coinbase. It’s designed to offer faster, cheaper transactions while maintaining the security and decentralization of the Ethereum mainnet.

Base uses a technology called Optimistic Rollups to bundle many transactions together before settling them on Ethereum. This allows users to benefit from low gas fees and fast transaction speeds.

The network is fully compatible with Ethereum, meaning you can use familiar platforms and assets, like ERC-20 tokens, on Base. All you need is ETH on Base to cover gas fees.

Interacting with Base Chain with Best Wallet

To get started, you’ll need a wallet that supports the Base network, like any multi-chain wallet in Best Wallet.

Please Note: Any EVM-only wallet in Best Wallet does not currently support Base Chain. If you do transfer Base tokens to an EVM-only wallet, read our guide on how to re-access your tokens.

You’ll also need ETH on Base to pay any gas fee. It's important to own Base ETH, not Ethereum ETH — although they are the same asset, you can't use Ethereum ETH to pay any gas fees on the Base network.

You can:

  • Buy ETH directly on Base using Best Wallet

  • Bridge ETH from the Ethereum mainnet to Base

  • Receive ETH on Base from another wallet

With ETH on Base, you can start exploring the network — buying, sending, receiving, and swapping Base-compatible assets.

Buying crypto on Base

You can buy cryptocurrencies on the Base network directly in Best Wallet thanks to our integration with trusted third-party providers.

Just go to the Buy option, select one of the available-to-buy Base assets (including ETH, BRETT, CBBTC, and more), and complete your purchase via one of our trusted third-party providers. Read our step-by-step guide on how to buy Base Chain assets in-app.

Receiving crypto on Base

You can also receive Base tokens directly to any multi-chain wallet in Best Wallet.

To deposit Base tokens, just go to the Receive, select Base Chain, and use that wallet's specific Base address to transfer funds. Read our in-depth guide on how to receive Base Chain assets in-app.

Sending crypto on Base

You can also transfer any tokens you have on Base from Best Wallet — just go to Send, enter a Base-compatible address, and send your tokens. Read our guide on how to send tokens.

Swapping tokens on Base

You can swap tokens on Base directly in your multi-chain wallet without needing to use an external exchange. You can swap both on Base and cross-chain (say, Ethereum to Base or vice versa). Read our guides on how to swap on the same chain and cross-chain.

Understanding Base Chain gas fees

Just like Ethereum, every transaction on Base requires a gas fee, but on Base, fees are generally much lower.

Key things to know about gas fees on Base:

  • Fees are significantly lower than Ethereum’s mainnet, but it's always good to hold a decent amount of Base ETH. Read our guide on paying gas fees here.

  • Network congestion can cause gas prices to vary, so keep an eye on the network activity. You can use a blockchain like https://basescan.org/ to track.

Before sending, swapping, or interacting with a dApp, make sure you have ETH on Base to cover the gas cost. Read our guide explaining what gas fees are and how they work.

Why use Base Chain on Best Wallet?

Base is a great way to explore the Ethereum ecosystem with lower costs and faster transactions. Best Wallet gives you full support for Base in one place:

  • Seamless Base Chain integration: Buy, send, receive, and swap Base tokens directly in-app.

  • Low gas fees: Pay far less than on the Ethereum mainnet.

  • Fast processing: Transactions typically complete in seconds.

  • Full Ethereum compatibility: Use ERC-20 tokens, explore dApps, and interact with smart contracts.
