Polygon (MATIC) has announced the migration to a new token on September 4, 2024. This means that the native token of the Polygon network will now be under the ticker POL, instead of MATIC.
Learn what that means for you in Best Wallet, especially if you currently own MATIC tokens.
If you own MATIC on Polygon
If you hold MATIC tokens on the Polygon network, you won’t have to do anything. Your tokens will automatically upgrade to POL tokens.
All you will have to do is refresh your token list in Best Wallet on September 4 by tapping the 3 dots on the right-hand side of your Tokens/Transactions tabs.
Post-migration, all gas fees on the Polygon network will be paid in POL tokens.
We highly recommend you don’t transact on the Polygon network during the migration period. Read more on how this migration might impact you.
If you own MATIC on Ethereum
If you hold MATIC tokens on the Ethereum network, you will need to migrate from MATIC to POL manually. A quick way to know what network your token is on is to check the logo next to the token symbol — MATIC tokens on Ethereum will have the Ethereum logo next to it!
First, you will need to either find or import the POL token on Ethereum into Best Wallet. You can do so by refreshing your token list and searching for POL, or importing it by using the POL token contract address. Read our step-by-step guide on how to find and import a token.
Next, you will have to upgrade your existing MATIC tokens to POL manually.
You do this via the Polygon Portal POL Upgrade. All you need to do is connect your wallet that holds the Ethereum MATIC — read our guide on connecting a wallet to a website dApp.
Step 1: Connecting your wallet
First, head to the POL Upgrade Polygon Portal page.
Next, you will have to connect your Best Wallet.
You will have to do this via Wallet Connect.
You may have to go to "View All" and then search "Best Wallet" to find it.
Tap on the Best Wallet logo, and allow permission for the portal to open your Best Wallet app. In Best Wallet, tap "Connect" to confirm the connection. Make sure you are connecting the right wallet in Best Wallet — you will need to connect the wallet that holds the Ethereum MATIC tokens.
Step 2: Upgrading your MATIC to POL
After you connect, return to the Polygon Portal. You will see your wallet connected in the top right. You will also see the amount you hold in MATIC — tap "Max" to ensure you upgrade all your MATIC.
You will receive the same amount in POL. Note: You will need ETH in your wallet to pay the transaction gas fee — you can see how much this is at the bottom. Next, tap the "Upgrade MATIC to POL" button at the bottom
After you tap the upgrade button, you will need to once again allow your Best Wallet app to be opened.
Back in your Best Wallet app, you will need to tap "Approve" again. This is to approve the token migration from MATIC to POL.
Once approved, return to Polygon Portal. You should see confirmation of your MATIC → POL conversion — you will also be able to see it on Etherscan.
Return to your Best Wallet app; you should see your new amount in POL! If you don't, you might need to refresh your token list by tapping the 3 dots on the right-hand side of your Tokens/Transactions tabs.
By doing this, you ensure you hold the correct token of the Polygon network, even as an Ethereum ERC-20 token.
Other MATIC Usage
If you hold or engage with MATIC in any other capacity, including if you stake MATIC or hold MATIC on Polygon zkEVM, please refer to Polygon Network’s guide for more information.
If you need further support
Whilst September 4th marks the expected mainnet date for the MATIC → POL upgrade, it may take longer and we recommend you do not transact on Polygon on September 4. Make sure to follow our social accounts to remain up-to-date on any changes around the Polygon upgrade.
As the Polygon network upgrades from MATIC to POL, POL will become the gas and staking token of Polygon PoS, as well as more future utility. It therefore is important that if you do hold MATIC (Polygon or Ethereum), you know what to do to ensure a smooth migration.
If you've followed all the steps and your tokens don't seem to have migrated, please email [email protected] and the support team will help you troubleshoot and resolve your issue.
